Balance and Vestibular Rehabilitation Program is a comprehensive program designed to help people suffering from dizziness and imbalance. Balance depends upon the integrative functioning of sensory, visual, vestibular, proprioceptive and tactile input into the nervous system. When the body has suffered from disease, injury or trauma to the nervous system, the ability to de-code the multiple sensory input and coordinate the bodys motor system to act/react appropriately, fails and the bodys balance mechanism is impaired. A comprehensive evaluation, incorporating standardized tests (Berg, Rhomberg, and Dynamic Gait Index) performed by a physical therapist skilled in vestibular assessment is critical to the client with balance dysfunction. Balance-Vestibular Evaluation The physical therapist will assess the following:
Treatment depends upon the source causing the balance dysfunction. The source can be located in the inner ear where the vestibular complex is located, or in the peripheral system that contains the muscles, sensory and proprioceptive tissues. Types of treatment methods used:

Cancer Recovery and Wellness Program is an eight week program twice weekly that provides one hour of lecture and one hour of exercise. This program is provided in a group setting to allow the individual to share experiences with other treatment recipients.Cancer Recovery Lecture Topics Include:

"The Silent Thief" Characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, Osteoporosis is becoming an epidemic effecting more than 28 million Americans, 80% of whom are women. Often referred to as "The Silent Thief", Osteoporosis occurs without any symptoms and usually becomes noticeable when a fracture or major postural changes have occurred. Osteoporosis is responsible for more than 1.5 million fractures annually. The majority of fractures occur in the thoracic-lumbar vertebrae and in the hip area. Prevention and Treatment Detection of Osteoporosis is crucial. Bone Density Tests are available to measure bone density in various sites of the body and has the ability to detect the chances of fractures occurring in the future. These tests should be done on a routine annual base to determine the rate of bone loss. Prevention of further bone loss and decelerating the rate of bone loss is the next step. Diet changes, lifestyle changes and exercise programs focused for the Osteoporosis client is critical in the treatment for this disease. JFK Medical Center Outpatient Therapy Center provides a comprehensive program for the Osteoporosis individual. It is a four-week program that provides information on the disease, nutritional information with the option of a nutritionist consult, information on energy conservation techniques, site specific exercises for the individual based on a comprehensive evaluation and development of a home based exercise program for the continuation of exercise. Admission criteria into the program include an individual diagnosed with Osteoporosis and presents with a standard deviation of -2.5 on the Bone Density Test. Pilates Developed by Joseph Pilates this exercise technique has been widely used through the fitness and dance industries. By incorporating components of flexibility, strengthening, concentration and controlled breathing individuals can reduce pain, increase energy and endurance, and improve overall function and wellness. With the use of the clinical reformer-trapeze apparatus individuals can use springs for controlled resistance while positioning their body for optimum stretch and control. Using these movement techniques allows the therapist to develop site specific exercises crucial for the Osteoporosis, Fibromyalgia and general de-conditioned individual.
